Washington County is home to Vermont's capital city of Montpelier, but it is also home to some of the state’s finest outdoor recreation opportunities. The Cross-VT Trail runs right through the heart of Washington County, and both Waterbury and Stowe (on the northern border in Lamoille county) host an abundance of recreational bike paths, including miles and miles of scenic dirt and asphalt trails. Washington County is also home to the Mad River Valley and its year-round recreational opportunities. A long term goal for this region is to link Stowe with the Mad River Valley via a world class cycling corridor, connecting two of Vermont’s most famous mountain biking and skiing areas.

Local Motion supports the efforts of local communities to make Washington County and its towns a safer place for walking and biking. We are working with the citizens of Montpelier and Barre to improve safety on the Barre-Montpelier road through a redesign that creates safer driving conditions and more room for cyclist and walkers. Local Motion has also works with Washington County schools to help students at Moretown Elementary, the New School, and others to learn how to pedal with style and confidence through our Bike Smart trainings, while providing training to help adults incorporate cycling into their routine through our Everyday Bicycling workshops.
