Franklin County

Situated on the Canadian border, Franklin county consists of rolling mountains and shoreline criss-crossed by trails and roads well-suited for walking and biking. Perhaps the most significant of these trails is the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail which allows locals and tourist alike to ski, walk, or ride into Northern Vermont’s agricultural heartland on easy gently sloping hills and wide bends. Franklin County is also home to what will ultimately the western terminus of the LaSwantonRecPath.jpgmoille Valley Rail Trail, creating a cross-Vermont trail for walking and biking.

Local Motion supports the efforts of local communities to make Franklin County and its towns a safer place for walking and biking. In Swanton, we have worked with local community leaders to develop a walk/bike safety action plan that redesigns several intersections and pilots reverse angle parking to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists. We’ve also helped students at LEAPS Afterschool Program, Highgate, Berkshire Elementary, and St. Albans City School learn how to pedal with style and confidence through our Bike Smart trainings.

To become more involved in making Franklin County a safer place to walk and bike, consider getting involved locally, or host a bicycling education event in your workplace.
